A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a 17-year-old girl who disappeared seven weeks ago.
Cambridgeshire police said they have declared a murder investigation “without a body” following the disappearance of Bernadette Walker.
Her parents reported the teenager missing in Peterborough on July 21 after they had not seen her for three days.
A man in his 50s from Peterborough was arrested on suspicion of Bernadette’s murder and is in custody, police said.
Detective Chief Inspector Jerry Waite said: “Due to the length of time Bernadette has been missing and concerns that she may have suffered some harm, we made the decision to declare this a murder investigation yesterday morning.
“While we hope to find Bernadette alive and well, there is a possibility that this is not the case, therefore my team and I will do our best to find out what happened to her and bring the offenders to justice.”
Officers continue to search for Bernadette, Cambridgeshire Police said.
Anyone with information on Bernadette’s whereabouts should contact the police.
