JURGEN KLOPP looked amused and baffled in equal measure when, inadvertently, he was told he was dodging questions about a possible move for Bayern star Thiago Alcántara.
The German had been shy about speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Leeds United tomorrow.
And after the interview concluded, host Rob Wotton began addressing the television audience directly … unaware that Klopp was still on the line.
The 53-year-old’s face reacted hilariously to what was said, from amusement, surprise and bewilderment.
Wotton said: “A fascinating mentality from Jurgen Klopp heading into the attack of the new title.
“Still processing what he had to say about Wijnaldum, Alcantara … he dodged it wonderfully and I’m pleased to know which mug he’s drinking his tea from as well.
Klopp’s facial expressions had fans hysterical, with no shortage of reactions on social media.
One wrote: “When you say you sidestepped the Thiago issue, I almost died in Klopps’ face.”
While another added: “I was not impressed!”
A third replied: “Klopp is a different kind of coach, just brilliant.”
Liverpool have been linked to Bayern midfielder Thiago throughout the summer, although they have yet to come to an agreement for the Spaniard.
When asked specifically about Sky Sports transfers, the shy Klopp said: “Since I’ve been here, there hasn’t been a transfer window where I’ve thought: ‘If we don’t get this player, we can’t start the season.’ . Not even once.
“We are in a luxurious situation where if we can bring in someone, they will be a really good player, and if we don’t, we have really good players.”
“It is a bit of theater, this transfer business, but in all the years that I am here it is always the same. That does not mean that we always did things well, we did things as well as we could.
“It depends on different things; you are finding the player, you have the money and all that kind of thing. But I read this morning that someone who saw my body language saw ‘anxiety or anger’ or things like that. Interesting!
“That starts very early, judging my body language! I hope by the season, when we lose a game, everyone will see if I’m still the funny guy I used to be at some press conferences when we won a game, but this is very early, I haven’t even played a game. “
The Reds will begin their title defense at Anfield tomorrow when they take on newly promoted Leeds United.
While Marcelo Bielsa’s team has been busily recruiting new players, including Rodrigo and Robin Koch, Liverpool’s only acquisition has been Greek side Kostas Tsimikas.
