The 23-year-old Van de Beek became Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first signing in the summer transfer window after the Red Devils closed a £ 40m deal with Ajax for the Dutch midfielder earlier this year. month.
Jadon Sancho remains Solskjaer’s main attacking target and remains closely linked with the Old Trafford giants, despite Borussia Dortmund appearing to rule out a move for the 20-year-old last month.
A dazzling offer of £ 90 million, plus another £ 18 million owed in performance-related add-ons, has been put forward for the England winger, but Arsenal legend Wright feels that United should prioritize strengthening their options in the other end of the field.
‘He’s a fantastic player,’ Wright said in The Kelly and Wrighty Show when talking about the arrival of Van de Beek.
“ He can play number 6, he can play number 8, he can play number 10. You’re looking [Bruno] Fernandes and [Paul] Pogba and they will probably play with him [Van de Beek] perhaps only from behind because it is fantastic football, it is a fantastic signing.
“ When you look at Man United, what they have in front of them and you put Van de Beek there with them too – they just signed a signing on Fernandes and everything changed, they suddenly looked amazing.
But for me, defensively, I feel like they are still very weekly.
‘We are hearing that Manchester City could have [Kalidou] Koulibaly – United have to go in there to try and make that deal!
‘If you look at them from the left side, we do know [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka is a fantastic right-back and a great defender, but [Victor] Lindelof and even Harry Maguire, from the left side, are there for the taking.
“If you’re going to challenge those teams, that must be a lot stronger.”
Wright believes United should take a leaf out of Liverpool’s book and “tackle the real problems” like solving their defensive problems.
“I feel like if you look at the value they could get from Van de Beek and what you can get from Jack Grealish … they have Fernandes, they have Pogba in terms of creativity,” he added.
‘I’m not sure where he [Sancho] work at United now.
“They have a player in Van de Beek who can play three positions, so it’s a good deal for them.
“As much as we hear and see great things from Jadon Sancho, Man United must do what Liverpool did: tackle the real issues and then see where they go from there.”
