Number of schools with Covid outbreaks in Greater Manchester now exceeds 50

The number of schools to confirm Covid cases in Greater Manchester has reached 55.

Less than a week after most of the children returned to class and thousands of them now have to isolate themselves.

Yesterday we reported how the number of schools with positive cases, both primary and secondary, had reached 41. Now 14 more have been confirmed.

At one school, Adswood Primary in Stockport, pupils from both Year 1 classes, both Year 2 classes and one Year 5/6 class were asked to stay home.

While some high schools have been sending home groups year-round, two reported today that although they have cases, they have been able to limit the number of isolations to smaller groups that have been in close contact with affected students.

Manchester Communication Academy in Harpurhey has sent home a bubble since Year 11, while Salford City Academy in Eccles has sent home a small group of its seniors after using seating plans to ‘identify the contacts of the confirmed case ‘.

A spokesperson for the Department of Education said: “The small number of schools that are asking some or all of their students to stay home are following our clear published process after a positive case was confirmed at one school.

“If a positive case is confirmed, swift action will be taken to ask those who have been in close contact with them to isolate themselves, and the local Public Health England health protection teams are ready to support and advise schools on this. situation. Children who isolate themselves will continue to receive distance education from home.

“We will continue to work with schools to ensure that all appropriate steps are taken to keep students and staff safe.”
