Grant Shapps defends the government’s decision to have Tony Abbott represent the UK in trade negotiations.
Grant Shapps has said “I’ve always been a very liberal kind of person,” when asked about former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s views on homosexuality, women leaders and climate change.
Speaking to Sky News, the Secretary of Transportation said: “Anyone who doubts that global temperatures are changing and that it has something to do with the presence of men and women on this planet is wrong, so I do not agree with that. “.
When asked why the government chose Abbott to represent the UK in trade negotiations, he cited Abbott’s track record of negotiating deals in Asia for Australia.
“The UK has not been in the business of negotiating trade deals for 45 years, more now, since it went to the EU to do so, so we appreciate the help and support to do so, but as we say, one of the 16 people who do it don’t pay you, ”he said.
Shapps added: “I’ve always been a very liberal type of person, I don’t really care what people do in their private lives and I certainly believe that climate change is real and we have to act on it.
“But I agree that Britain needs a really good trade deal or trade deals around the world and it is a great opportunity for the UK and we need experience with that.
“Here’s someone who has global experience and who was the Prime Minister of Australia, he’s not just some random guy and he’s a voice in a lot of different voices not paid for the role and I think we can secure jobs in Britain if we have big trade agreements in other parts of the world. “
