Harry Dunn’s death: accused ‘had no immunity’

Harry Dunn’s family say they have told prosecutors they do not believe the woman accused of killing the teenager in an accident had diplomatic immunity.

Dunn, 19, was killed last August when his motorcycle collided with a car allegedly driven by Anne Sacoolas outside a US airbase in the UK.

Her parents said that the director of the public prosecutor’s office was “actively considering” a virtual trial of Ms. Sacoolas.

The US government has previously rejected an extradition request from the UK.

However, Charlotte Charles and Tim Dunn said they were “extremely disappointed” and disappointed after their meeting with Max Hill QC at Crown Prosecution Service headquarters.

Ms. Sacoolas, 42, the wife of a US intelligence official, claimed diplomatic immunity after the crash in Croughton, Northamptonshire, and was able to return to her home country, sparking an international controversy.

Radd Seiger, the family’s spokesman, told reporters that the family felt “desperate” after the meeting and that the United States had not changed its position on the immunity claimed by Ms. Sacoolas.

Mr. Dunn’s family has also filed a civil claim for damages against Ms. Sacoolas.

Seiger said the wrongful death damages suit had been filed in the courts of the US state of Virginia.

Commenting after the meeting, Greg McGill, CPS’s director of legal services, said: “Today we met with Harry Dunn’s family to update them on the various steps CPS has taken over the past 10 months to ensure justice in this tragic case.

“The challenges and complexity of this case are well known, but CPS and other partners have been working tirelessly to do everything possible to bring Anne Sacoolas to face the charge we have brought: causing death by dangerous driving.

“We know that this is a very difficult process for the family, so we wanted to personally assure them that we continue to seek justice for them and for the public.”
