Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that test events for fans have been suspended in a major blow to Aston Villa, Birmingham City, West Brom, Wolves and the Premier League itself as coronavirus cases rise.

Fans have been returning to select sporting events since July as the UK government planned for fans to return to stadiums with limited capacity permanently from 1 October at the earliest.

But an increase in coronavirus cases across the country has prompted the UK government to suspend those test events pending a review.

At Johnson’s daily briefing, he spoke about the new measures being taken after what he described as a “rapid increase in cases” in recent days.

Social gatherings of more than six people will be prohibited from Monday indoors or outdoors, including homes, parks, pubs and restaurants. There will be penalties of £ 100 if people do not comply with this.

Organized sports in safe Covid environments are kept except. Steps are being taken to reduce the risk of a second wave that could lead to a second national lockdown.
