A far-right Norwegian MP has nominated Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for the second time, citing his role in normalizing relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.
Christian Tybring-Gjedde told Fox News: “On his merit, I think he has done more to try to create peace between nations than most of the peace prize nominees.”
Trump responded to the news of his 2021 award nomination by expressing his appreciation on Twitter.
The bar to be nominated for the award is low, as nominations are accepted from any politician serving at the national level or from heads of state. For the 2020 award, the winner of which has yet to be announced, there were 318 candidates.
Tybring-Gjedde said in his nomination letter: “As other Middle Eastern countries are expected to follow in the footsteps of the UAE, this agreement could be a game changer that will turn the Middle East into a region of cooperation and prosperity.” .
So far there have been no signs of this happening, with a recent visit by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to the region that yielded no new developments.
Tybring-Gjedde was one of two Norwegian politicians who nominated Trump for the peace prize in 2018 for his efforts to achieve reconciliation between North and South Korea. The Norwegian Nobel committee does not comment publicly on the nominees. According to its rules, information must be kept secret for 50 years.
A group of House Republicans also sent an open letter to the committee in 2018 urging them to award the award to Trump the following year.
An earlier attempt to nominate Trump ended in mystery when two nominations submitted by him in 2017 turned out to be false. The committee later withdrew them, prompting Norwegian police to contact the FBI to try to locate the culprits.
The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Barack Obama in 2009 for his “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation among people.” He donated the $ 1.4 million prize to charity. In 2013, Trump called for the Obama award to be rescinded.
Other award winners from the previous American administration have included Woodrow Wilson in 1920, for his efforts to end the First World War and participate in the creation of the League of Nations. Jimmy Carter received the award in 2002, and former Vice President Al Gore was honored in 2007 for his efforts to spread awareness about climate change.
