Jack Grealish sends this message to the head of England, Gareth Southgate

Jack Grealish is relieved that his five-year wait for England’s recognition has finally come to a happy ending.

The Aston Villa captain made his long-awaited bow to England in the 76th minute of last night’s 0-0 draw with Denmark.

He did so by being left out of Gareth Southgate’s initial team announcement, but an injury caused Marcus Rashford to retire and the indiscretions of Mason Greenwood and Phil Foden pushed him higher in the pecking order.

“He was actually a little excited,” Grealish told Sky Sports after the game.

“It’s something you dream of, all the kids in England dream of since they were little: playing for the England senior team. I was privileged to enter and it was a shame that we couldn’t win in the end.

“I want to thank (manager) Gareth (Southgate) himself for giving me the opportunity and I hope it is the first of many.

“It was a brilliant moment for me and my family.”

His first appearance was a signature Grealish run, but he couldn’t produce a final product – not that he was too downhearted, even if he admits that he might have been more selfish if the situation had arisen in a Villa game.
