Thousands of pupils now have to isolate themselves in Greater Manchester after more confirmed cases in schools.
Yesterday we revealed how 15 schools had sent the children home, including four secondary schools and 11 elementary schools.
Now 17 others have alerted parents to positive cases, and the exact number is expected to be even higher.
The size of the school bubbles students have placed in determines how many children need to isolate themselves. While in some schools it is restricted to one class, in others there are entire school year groups and in some elementary schools, two full year groups.
One of them is Wilbraham Elementary School in Fallowfield, where Principal Steve Wheeldon has been speaking openly about the impact confirmed cases are having on families, leaving some parents in tears.
Elsewhere, Harrop Fold School in Little Hulton has become the third Salford high school to send pupils home, and all Year 11 pupils are asked to self-isolate.
It comes after Buile Hill Academy in Pendleton and Co-Op Academy Swinton also sent yearlong groups home.
In some schools, students have escaped isolation after confirmed cases were deemed not to have created any risk of transmission.
These include Holly Mount RC Primary in Bury, where a staff member tested positive and is now isolating, and Royton and Crompton Academy in Oldham, where there has been a positive case, but is again the only person who was asked to isolate.
There has also been a confirmed case at Bury Church of England High School and a letter to parents says the school is working “to identify any member of the school who may have been a possible contact.”
The list of schools where students isolate themselves after confirmed cases:
- Harrop Fold, Salford – (Year 11)
- Ellenbrook Elementary School, Walkden, Salford – (One Year 3 class)
- Wilbraham Primary School, Fallowfield – (Year 3 and Year 4)

- St Michael CE Elementary, Atherton, Wigan
Only if children who are asked to self-isolate begin to suffer symptoms, other members of their household must face the same restrictions, which means that siblings can attend school as usual.
While some parents are understandably frustrated that children have more free time when they have just returned, the schools say they are simply following the guidelines set out by Public Health England and the Department of Education.
