The Queen and Prince Philip will shorten their summer vacation in Scotland and leave Balmoral next week to spend time ‘in private’ at Sandringham, announces Buckingham Palace.

  • Queen, 94, and the Duke of Edinburgh, 99, will leave Balmoral for Sandringham
  • The couple arrived at the Scottish estate in August and have enjoyed visits from their family.
  • They usually stay there until early October, but now they will be leaving next week.
  • The Queen and Prince Felipe have been isolated since the start of the confinement.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will interrupt their summer holidays in Scotland and head to Sandringham next week, it has been announced.

The 94-year-old queen and 99-year-old Prince Philip normally stay at Balmoral, Aberdeenshire, until early October, but will now depart next week, Buckingham Palace said in a statement today.

The couple were expected to spend a few more weeks in Scotland before returning to Windsor, where they had been isolated before their summer vacation.

However, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will now spend at least two weeks “in private” at Sandringham. Then the Queen plans to travel to Windsor in early October.

A spokesman for Buckingham Palace said: “The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will depart from Balmoral Castle during the week beginning September 14 to spend some private time at the Sandringham Estate.

Subject to the completion of the fall program, Her Majesty’s intention is to return to Windsor Castle in October and resume the use of Buckingham Palace for select audiences and engagements.

“These plans will be kept under review and, of course, will be subject to all pertinent guidance and advice.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have spent time at the estate, as have Princess Anne and Prince Andrew.

It comes after reports that the Queen is set to make Windsor Castle her primary home and will not resume her residence at Buckingham Palace this year, according to a royal source.

Her Majesty would like to ‘travel’ to London for engagements if it is safe to do so, the Sunday Times reported.

The Queen’s absence from Buckingham Palace is believed to be the longest during her 68-year reign.

The queen used to return to the premises in October after her summer vacation at Balmoral.

Instead, after his time at Sandringham, he will return to Windsor Castle, where he was isolated with the Duke of Edinburgh since March 19 before his holiday in Scotland.

A royal source said: “There is a desire for Buckingham Palace to function as a functioning palace again, but only if all relevant councils suggest that it is appropriate to do so.”

But apparently His Majesty will not return to Buckingham Palace again until the threat of COVID-19 is extinguished.

However, it is believed that the Queen will spend her usual Christmas holidays at Sandringham in Norfolk.
