People in and around Caerphilly will not be able to leave the area after an increase in coronavirus cases, the Welsh health minister said.
The new COVID-19 closing will begin at 6 pm on Tuesday.
The new rules are:
- People will not be allowed to enter or leave the area without a reasonable excuse.
- All persons over 11 years of age must wear face covers in stores; the first time this will be mandatory in Wales
- Gatherings with other people indoors and extended homes will not be allowed.
- People will only be able to meet other people outdoors, with restricted indoor gatherings and gatherings
- Overnight stays will also be prohibited
- The new measures will be applied by the local authority and the police.
Health Minister Vaughan Gething said: “We have seen a significant increase in cases in the Caerphilly district in a very short period of time, which are related to holiday trips abroad and people socializing indoors and not following social distancing guidelines.
“Many of these cases are in younger people and, fortunately, at the moment, most are mild.
“But coronavirus now it is circulating in the community and it is only a matter of time before we start to see more serious cases that need hospital treatment. “
Last week 133 new cases were confirmed, a rate of 55.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, the highest in Wales and one of the highest in the UK.
It comes after two more areas were given coronavirus restrictions in and around Glasgow after an increase in COVID-19 cases there.
Scotland’s prime minister said the “regrettable but necessary” action meant that the ban on interior visits in Glasgow, East Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire would continue for another week and be extended to Renfrewshire and East Dunbartonshire.
Nicola sturgeon He said it was “in these gatherings, rather than in pubs, that older and more vulnerable people may be at higher risk of infection.”
In announcing the move on Twitter, he said: “If you live in the council areas of Glasgow City, E or W Dunbartonshire, E Renfrewshire or Renfrewshire, please do not allow other people to visit you in your home and do not visit other homes anywhere in Scotland.
“If we comply with this, hopefully further restrictions can be avoided.
“Cases are increasing across the UK, and while we are not yet seeing a significant increase in hospital cases and deaths, this may only be a matter of time.
“We must work hard to keep COVID under control.”
