Pierre Gasly caused a stir in modern Formula 1 by winning his inaugural race with AlphaTauri after an enormously dramatic and event-filled Italian GP in which Lewis Hamilton finished only seventh after a time penalty.

Gasly, the 24-year-old Frenchman, just stopped McLaren’s Carlos Sainz in a tense finish for a memorable and emotional victory on a day when the sport’s regular heavy hitters made mistakes or retired.

Racing Point’s Lance Stroll was third for his second career podium, with Lando Norris fourth in the second McLaren.

Incredibly, AlphaTauri, Red Bull’s youth team and Italy’s ‘second’ team, became the first team outside of Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull to win a race since 2013.

Hamilton led the early stages of the race, but was imposed a costly stop-start penalty for pitting when pit lane was “closed” after Kevin Magnussen’s Haas pulled up to the side of the track.

The six-time champion fell to the bottom of the field, but raced to the points and seventh to minimize the impact on his championship lead. His teammate Valtteri Bottas was still fifth after a rather steamy afternoon after a poor initial start, while Max Verstappen retired due to mechanical problems on his Red Bull.

But it was even worse for Ferrari, the supposed standard-bearer of Italy.

A big crash by Charles Leclerc on the Parabolica brought out the red flags after 27 laps and suspended the race.

It also put an end to Ferrari’s interest in his home, as Sebastian Vettel has already retired early due to a brake failure. The German was unable to slow down his car at the end of the pit straight and spectacularly removed the styrofoam plates at the first exit from the chicane.

Daniel Ricciardo was sixth in the leading Renault, and Hamilton’s final overtake in recovery demoted Esteban Ocon at the end. Daniil Kvyat and Sergio Pérez will be disappointed with only ninth and tenth place respectively, given that their teammates finished on the podium.
