Jamie Carragher believes Man Utd Executive Vice President Ed Woodward is “cursed if he does and cursed if he doesn’t” at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils finally got their first summer signing over the line last week when Donny van de Beek moved from Ajax to Man Utd for around £ 40 million.
Pressure had been building on the Woodward and United board with a deal for the main target, Jadon Sancho, who appeared to be coming to a standstill, and Borussia Dortmund confirmed that the winger would stay with the German club.
MAILBOX: Man Utd needs more than a few pairs of designer glasses …
On the persecution of Sancho by the red devils, Carragher wrote in The Sunday Times: “United will finally pay Borussia Dortmund, who have valued the player at £ 120m, which he needs for the 20-year-old because he is one of two Premier League teams that still have the finances to spend a lot in the middle of the pandemic.
“When United paid huge fees for players in the past, we all laughed and said, ‘They’ve been done again.’ The same thing happened with Liverpool. We would spend a fortune on a player, the play would not work and everyone laughed. Now United is in the line of fire.
“People say Ed Woodward, United’s executive vice president, is a joke because selling clubs can get him an extra £ 10 million or 20 million. But Woodward is doomed if he does and damned if he doesn’t. You really can’t win.
“I have been there for Liverpool. We would be interested in a player and I would say, ‘Pay!’ Then a few months later, when the player has problems, you ask yourself: ‘Why do we pay so much?’
“United almost have a clear career in Sancho now, but that will change if he is still in Dortmund next year. I would be very surprised if Liverpool didn’t try to sign him next summer. I don’t think City want him for the way he left when he was 17 in 2017, while Chelsea may think so.
“United needs someone on that right side. At just 18, Mason Greenwood has come in and done brilliantly, but he will eventually play down the middle, such is his strength as a finalist.
“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tested Marcus Rashford, Daniel James and even Juan Mata in that role on the right side, now he’s Greenwood. United also need a central defender, as they can be defensively fragile. But the fact that Chelsea signed 35-year-old Thiago Silva tells you that there aren’t many great central defenders.
Unless United have a couple more players, I don’t see how they will challenge City and Liverpool at the top. You need a minimum of 95 points to win the title now, and I think only City and Liverpool can get that kind of total. “
