West Midlands police launched a murder investigation after a series of stabbings in Birmingham city center left one man dead, two seriously injured and five others wounded.
West Midlands Police declared a major incident in Birmingham city center after a series of stabbings in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Officers said they were initially called in to receive reports of a stabbing around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, with “a series of other stabbings” between 12:30 and 2:20 a.m. Police said they were linked and were doing everything possible to find the responsible.
They said they were pursuing various lines of investigation and had increased their uniformed and armed presence in the city.
Ch Supt Steve Graham, Birmingham Police Chief, said: “The events in the early hours of this morning are tragic, shocking and understandably terrifying.
“Rest assured that we are doing everything possible to find the culprit and try to understand what exactly happened.
“We have well-rehearsed plans to deal with major incidents. Your safety is always our priority and that is why you will see an increase in officers on the streets.
“In the meantime, we ask anyone in town to stay alert and report anything suspicious to us.”
West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson said: “Last night’s events are truly terrible and have shocked the people of Birmingham, the West Midlands and the country.
“My first thoughts are with the victims and their families at this time.
“I have all faith in the West Midlands Police, who are working extremely fast on this investigation.
“My thanks also go to the ambulance and hospital staff who are working around the clock to help the injured.”
