Passenger ‘trapped’ after ship capsized in water off Anglesey

Three people and a dog were saved in a dramatic rescue operation after a boat capsized in the Menai Strait.

A passenger was trapped under the boat after it capsized in the water on Saturday afternoon.

Emergency services were called in for the incident near Anglesey at around 1.30pm yesterday (August 5).

A coast guard spokesman said there were “multiple” and “constant” calls about the incident from eyewitnesses who watched the events unfold from shore.

The ship was understood to be sailing in an area of ​​the strait known as “the Swellies” when it encountered difficulties between the Menai and Britannia bridges.

Several rescue teams from the surrounding area, including Beaumaris RNLI, the Holyhead Coast Guard and crews from Caernarfon, were dispatched to the scene.

The Bangor Mobile Rescue Team and Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter were also dispatched as part of the large emergency service response to the incident.

They were later rescued and brought to shore by a passing private boat, supposedly a speedboat.

North Wales Live understands that the survivors were also accompanied by a dog on board the ship.

All the occupants of the boat, including the dog, were rescued as part of the operation and are now safe.

However, according to RNLI Beaumaris, one person suffered minor injuries during yesterday’s incident.

The passenger is believed to have been trapped underwater after the ship capsized.

They suffered a shoulder injury and were later transferred to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor for paramedics to treat them on the spot.

The ship is believed to have sunk in the strait after capsizing.
