The Red Devils have been linked with the Borussia Dortmund star throughout the summer, but so far no agreement has been reached between the two sides.

Dortmund set an August 10 deadline for any moves to be completed, but that date passed without incident.

The Bundesliga club insisted that Sancho would not be sold this summer and the English international himself hinted that his long-term future lay with the German team.

Dortmund is believed to want a transfer fee in the region of £ 120 million, something Manchester United have been reluctant to spend.

Reports in recent days have suggested that the Red Devils will once again replace the 20-year-old before the transfer window closes on October 5.

And Liverpool legend Carragher believes United would be a challenge near the top echelons of the division with the addition of Sancho.

Writing in The Sunday Times, Carragher said: “I’ve always thought that one or two little things could change it and for me, signing Bruno Fernandes in January has completely changed United.

“That is just a signing. He came in and suddenly United were a totally different team. That’s how close it is.

“It could be that between Jadon Sancho and then United is fighting for the title. They are not as far as people think. One or two more signings could make a difference. “

Carragher believes United need Sancho on the right side because teenage sensation Mason Greenwood will eventually be moved to center.

He added: “United need someone on that right side. At just 18, Mason Greenwood has come in and done brilliantly, but he will eventually play down the middle, such is his strength as a finalist.

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tested Marcus Rashford, Daniel James and even Juan Mata in that role on the right side, now he’s Greenwood.

United also need a central defender, as they can be fragile on defense. But the fact that Chelsea have signed 35-year-old Thiago Silva tells you that there aren’t many great center-backs. “
