Northern Ireland coach Ian Baraclough insists that Norwich City full-back Jamal Lewis will not be able to get out of his country’s UEFA Nations League search to close out a Newcastle United play.

Lewis is currently in Belfast with his international team preparing for Monday’s qualifying game against Norway, as the two clubs discuss their future.

The magpies want the 22-year-old, who was the subject of a botched offer from Liverpool earlier this summer, and a £ 15 million transfer offer is currently being discussed which includes a number of possible add-ons.

Newcastle pumped up interest on Friday with a firm focus on City sporting director Stuart Webber, but Baraclough is confident Lewis won’t be distracted by the latest transfer episode.

“I spoke with Jamal before going in and again face to face, his head is in a good place,” he said, speaking to PA. “He knows that opportunities can come and go, club speculation, but he handles it very well. I have not noticed any disappointment in his work or his game, that’s fine.

“He will not leave the camp, he has been part of the recovery of the group (on Saturday). I haven’t heard anything, so I hope he’s dining.

“The Liverpool man is probably gone for now, but there is no reason why he should not be back in a year or two, there are many clubs linked to him.

“He knows that at the right time he and his family will make a decision that will benefit him. Just because one club doesn’t happen to you doesn’t mean other clubs aren’t interested. ”
