Phil Foden will make his England debut against Iceland on Saturday, with Gareth Southgate set to give the Manchester City midfielder a start in the Nations League tie.

The 20-year-old has been called up to the senior team for the first time for the double header against Iceland and Denmark after a good season finale with City.

Foden will follow Jadon Sancho and Callum Hudson-Odoi to become the third member of England’s triumphant U-17 World Cup team to make their senior debut.

He will also become the 31st player Southgate has made his England debut for since taking over as manager in 2016.

Southgate said before Saturday’s game that Foden is a “beautiful player to watch” and has clearly been impressed by the youngster, who has won a start after just four training sessions with the senior team.

The attacking midfielder played 38 games for Manchester City under Pep Guardiola last season.

Foden trusts the young stars of England

Foden is poised to become an England star and help bring some long-overdue silverware to the country.

The playmaker has tried “not to read too much” the excitement and anticipation in the run-up to his role in England’s victory at the Youth World Cup, with the City star focused on making his mark for the national team.

“I want to try to keep the jersey and play for England for many years,” Foden said. “I feel that as a team we can go much further than what we have done in the past.

“I feel really confident in the way we are going and the players we have. We need to start winning tournaments and I hope that in the future we can.”

Foden believes that the experience at the triumphant U-17 World Cup helped him learn to handle the pressure of playing big games.

“The medal is still in my cabinet at home,” said Foden, who also won the Ballon d’Or for his performances in India. “If you win youth tournaments when you are younger, it can give you the experience to go and win one in the first team.

“I feel like the World Cup definitely helped me play on the big stage and not feel as much pressure. I’ve played a lot of big games at Man City and I’ve learned to deal with the fans and the pressure. It kind of definitely helps you.”
