Former England footballer Gary Lineker will host a refugee to live at home with him.

The 59 year old has consistently criticized the government’s response to migrants crossing the English channel.

In August, the Match Of The Day host said the government had been “ruthless and completely without empathy” in its response.

Lineker is now preparing to welcome a refugee into his home, according to The Daily Mirror.

It comes after a record 409 people arrived in the UK after crossing the English Channel on Wednesday.

Lineker told the newspaper that he would have a home visit from the Refugees at Home charity to assess his home.

He said he did not know who his new guest would be or where they were from.

“I’ve had a lot of connection with refugees in recent years,” he told The Daily Mirror.

“I have met dozens of young refugees through soccer schemes and they are really lovely children and appreciate any help they can get.

“I’m sure it will be fine. I’ve been thinking about doing something like that for a while.

“All of my children have grown up, so I have plenty of space, so if I can temporarily help, then I am more than happy to do so. Why not?”

Conservative MP Lee Anderson last month accused Lineker of “signaling virtues,” saying he should take “the next ship of illegal immigrants.”

He responded by posting a screenshot of his email from Refugees at Home.
