A dog owner was ordered to do 150 hours of unpaid work after dash cam footage captured him hitting his cocker spaniel in public, the RSPCA said.

Gregory Phillips, 40, was filmed driving and violently hitting the dog on Pentre Street, Glynneath, Neath, South Wales, in March this year.

Passersby can be heard honking the car horn and yelling at Phillips to stop as he attacks the dog outside a local convenience store.

The cocker spaniel gets out of the man’s car while he goes to load a case of beer in the back seat.

He responds by picking up the dog, hitting the animal several times, and then throwing it into the trunk of the car along with other dogs, where he proceeds to continue hitting the spaniel.

Phillips pleaded guilty to the Animal Welfare Act offense and was sentenced in Swansea Magistrates Court.

They gave him a 12-month community order and told him to do 150 hours of unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay £ 300 in costs and a £ 90 surcharge to the victim.

RSPCA Inspector Keith Hogben said: “In broad daylight and with people around, this poor dog was beaten up by his owner, who clearly did not consider his legal responsibilities towards his animal.”

“Fortunately, the dash cam footage helped us identify this person and make sure we could take action.

“This is clearly not a way to treat an animal, and fortunately the vast majority of people in South Wales and beyond will be shocked by these images and the beating this poor cocker spaniel was subjected to.”
