Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must further convince the Manchester United board before any deal for Dayot Upamecano is signed.

According to monday Euro Paper TalkUnited plan to strengthen their central defense as a priority this summer. As such, they have targeted the powerful and skilled defender of RB Leipzig.

The 21-year-old proved to be one of Europe’s most outstanding defenders this season. He was a key man when Julian Nagelsmann’s team reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.

United’s chances of hiring him seemed to have ended last month when he signed a new contract with the Bundesliga team. That tied him to the club until 2023. More significantly, it increased its exit clause to € 60 million.

However, reports in Germany claim that the new deal includes a 42 million euro buyout clause. That goes into effect at the end of the 2020/21 season.

According ESPNSolskjaer wants the deal to be made now after identifying Upamecano as Harry Maguire’s ideal partner. As such, he is pressing Ed Woodward to sanction the € 60 million (£ 53.7 million) transfer now.

However the Daily telegraph reports that United’s board of directors has two reservations about the deal.

First, the report states that Woodward is unsure about spending £ 53.7 million now on a player available for £ 37.4 million next summer.

Second, United’s board of directors is concerned if Upamecano he can be trusted to start every week in the Premier League at such a young age. That’s despite Solskjaer putting the youth at the forefront of his rebuilding of Old Trafford.

In addition, the United management wants the club to get rid of its unwanted defenders before signing another. Solskjaer has a host of central halves at his disposal and the club needs to lighten the load.

That could mean people like Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones are leaving. There is also Leeds United’s interest in Axel Tuanzebe and that could also add to their coffers.
