Manchester United could postpone a bid for Red Bull Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano after members of the club’s board of directors raised concerns about a move for the Frenchman this summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eager to sign a quick center-back partner for Harry Maguire, which would allow United to play a higher line next season and thus put more pressure on opponents through high pressure.

Upamecano, 21, is considered one of the best prospects in world football and his striking performance in the German Champions League quarter-final victory against Atlético de Madrid in August caught the attention of clubs across Europe. .

However, the truth is that Upamecano has been on the radar of Europe’s elite for much longer and Solskjaer has suggested the Frenchman as the club’s next signing following the £ 40m acquisition of Donny van de Beek from Ajax.

However, according to the Telegraph, there is a debate within Old Trafford as to whether the club should go ahead on a move for the Frenchman.

Leipzig values the defender at around £ 60 million, but a clause in Upamecano’s contract means he can leave the club for around £ 40 million next summer, which means a significant cut in these challenging financial times.

But some board members have also raised questions about Upamecano’s readiness for a change to the club.

Although his ability is not in doubt, Upamecano is only 21 years old and some believe the Frenchman would benefit from at least another year in the Bundesliga before making a move.

Therefore, Solskjaer must convince his board of directors not to put off a move for another 12 months, when the race to sign the Frenchman is sure to be hotter than it is now.

United spent £ 30m on Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly, and while neither has been a disaster, neither is considered a top center-back.

So the board is reluctant to shell out even more in a challenging climate for a central defender that may take another three or four years for the real deal.

Solskjaer is having similar problems with his board because of a play by Jadon Sancho.

The club is determined to sign the 20-year-old, but not for Dortmund’s £ 108 million starting price.

Instead, United are prepared to bide the time during the transfer window and test Dortmund’s resolve later with a lower offer.
