Wolves run away from Maitland-Niles
The Wolves have taken a transfer hit on Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
Nuno’s side appeared to be crawling into a deal after having had an initial offer rejected earlier this month, but now it seems his hopes of reaching a deal are over.
According to Sky Sports, the Gunners now want to renew Maitland-Niles ‘contract, and will want to retain him for the next season, damaging the Wolves’ hopes of a deal.
It looked like Arsenal were going to change course on Maitland-Niles following his Man of the Match performance in yesterday’s Community Shield win over Liverpool.
The Wolves are still interested in completing a deal, according to the report, but admit that Arsenal’s assessment of the player will be very different from theirs.
Maitland-Niles has been called up for Gareth Southgate’s England team ahead of their Nations League matches next month.

Doherty breaks the silence
Matt Doherty has suggested that his career may go to the “next level” after completing his departure from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Doherty, who had spent 10 years at Molineux, confirmed his move to Tottenham on Sunday after the Wolves accepted an offer in the region of £ 15 million.
Wolves president Jeff Shi has stated that the deal is in the best interest of the club, and that Nuno Espirito Santo is eager to develop his small team.
Doherty has signed a four-year contract with the Spurs and has admitted that it would have been difficult to leave the Wolves, if he felt he was not moving to a new level.
He told the club’s site: “At Wolves I just had all the experiences – disappointment and then obviously I got promoted and things like that, but then I took it to the next level and also in Europe.
“It made me stay sane during my time there, but now I feel like coming here will take my game and my career to the next level. I think it would have been difficult (to leave the Wolves) if maybe I was going backwards or sideways, but I feel like in Tottenham now I’m taking a big step forward, just with the facilities, everything at the club and the coach here.
“After 10 years, I know a lot of people at Wolves, but now it’s a new challenge and it really is a challenge that I feel like I need right now.”
Doherty added: “With the size of the club, the training ground, the fact that we have the best stadium in the world and possibly the best training ground in the world from what I’ve seen, and the coach … once he knew that there was interest, it was a no-brainer for me to go to London. “
The Wolves will now be eagerly looking to replace Doherty, with three weeks until the new Premier League campaign begins.
Shi on the Doherty transfer
The departure of Matt Doherty from Wolverhampton Wanderers is the best for the club.
That’s according to CEO Jeff Shi, who admitted that it was not in the club’s plans to sell the Republic of Ireland international.
Doherty confirmed his transfer to Tottenham on Sunday, and the full-back agreed to a four-year contract with the North Londoners.
His move from the Spurs ends a ten-year stint at the Wolves for Doherty, racking up more than 300 appearances during his time at Molineux.
It is understood that the Wolves received around £ 15 million, with the former Bohemians club also receiving a percentage of the fee.
It leaves the Wolves with just two top full-backs, but Shi has revealed that after lengthy discussions, his move was sanctioned.
“Matt has been a fantastic player for the Wolves over the years, and as a member of the illustrious ‘300 club’ he will always have a place in their history,” Shi told the club’s official website.
“His departure was not something we had planned before the summer, but when the offer came, we discussed and analyzed it in depth with the technical team and the management. We also spoke with Matt, who was eager to move on to a new chapter in his career.
“Ultimately, we believe that this transfer is in the best interest of the club, and it goes without saying that Matt leaves with our best wishes.
“We thank him for his undoubted contribution during his stay here and we wish him the best of luck for the future.”
