Mikel Arteta claims that his Arsenal team is fearless when playing against the best teams in the Premier League after defeating Liverpool in the Community Shield.
Since Arteta was appointed, Arsenal have been impressive against the best teams in the League, defeating Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United.
That streak of form is a huge improvement on the Gunners’ previous record against the top four and the team was often criticized for its mentality in those games.
Arteta, however, claims that his group is fearless when facing the biggest teams in the Premier League, as evidenced by their victory over Liverpool in the Community Shield on Saturday.
“Two days ago we started to have players back to training and I didn’t hear a single excuse,” Arteta said.
“‘Oh they (Liverpool) had two weeks in Austria, better preparation.’ Nothing of that.
“When I was in the dressing room today I had the feeling that they believed we could win. They did not feel any fear.
“They wanted to really try and believed they could win another trophy. And they showed their courage and passion from the first minute.
“We know that if you want to fight for trophies, you cannot concede the amount of goals we have in recent seasons, that’s for sure. But obviously with the ball in the attack phase we must do much better.
“Today we had some periods in which we showed that we are developing in the right direction. Defensively we are solid, we are difficult to beat.
“Really, if we have the mentality that we have 11 players doing it, that it doesn’t matter who’s called, I think we have a very good chance.”
