Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has taken a surprising 180 degree turn on his future at the club and is now determined to stay at Stamford Bridge.
The Spaniard fell out of favor with Frank Lampard last season and was eliminated for the Blues’ FA Cup final loss to Arsenal in July.
That decision seemed almost to seal Kepa’s intentions to leave and the Spaniard had been eager to do so, with offers from his homeland to return after two years in London.
However, in an indication that the goalkeeper has not been impressed with the defense in front of him, the Sun assures that Kepa now wants to stay at Stamford Bridge after the arrivals of Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell.
Chilwell, 23, came in on a £ 50m deal from Leicester, while Silva signed a one-year deal after leaving Paris Saint-Germain.
The pair are sure to help Chelsea’s weak defense, which conceded 58 goals in the Premier League last season.
Kepa made several mistakes throughout the season, but the Spaniard believes he has been unfairly criticized and that a more experienced defense against him would improve his performances.
The Spaniard still has four years to execute his contract in West London, where he makes £ 150,000 a week.
Chelsea have already made five signings so far this summer and Lampard fears that a new goalkeeper is just another change.
The club had wanted to sell Kepa, but its £ 50 million asking price was too high for interested clubs.
Chelsea therefore seem keen to keep Kepa and Lampard will hope that the Spaniard’s performance can improve with an improved defense against him.
