A man is being pursued for attempted murder after he approached a random mother walking with her five-year-old son and stabbed her in a ‘cruel and unprovoked attack’.

Greater Manchester Police were called at 1.30pm on Saturday following reports of a stabbing in Withington, south of Manchester.

A mother, 24, was walking with her son when a man approached her with a knife.

He then stabbed her before fleeing, and police released CCTV footage of the attacker leaving the scene of the shocking attack.

The woman was taken to hospital with stab wounds and is stable.

His son was evaluated on the spot by emergency services, but he had no visible injuries.

Police have distributed an image of a man they believe to be the suspect and are treating the case as an attempted murder.

Detective Inspector John Robb of GMP Manchester City District said: ‘This was a cruel and unprovoked attack and we are currently treating it as an attempted murder case.

‘I understand that this will cause concern among the local community and residents, but I want to assure the public that we are doing everything in our power to track down the man responsible and ensure that he is brought to justice.

‘I would like to emphasize to the community that this violent behavior will not be tolerated and residents will see an increased police presence in the area as officers continue their investigations.
