Wolverhampton Wanderers are set to be in the market for a right-back, with Matt Doherty closing in on his exit from Molineux.

After a decade and more than 300 old gold appearances, the Republic of Ireland international is ready to move to Tottenham.

José Mourinho has designated Doherty as his number one transfer target, with two impressive seasons in the top flight behind him.

His departure will leave a huge gap within Nuno Espirito Santo’s team, with the Portuguese eager to improve the players at his disposal.

With a staggering 30 participation goals in the past two seasons, the Wolves will be desperate to replace not just their offensive outing, but the defensive solidity it provides as well.

Several names have been touted as a possible replacement for Doherty, but one who seems to be a better fit than most is believed to be approaching a Premier League move.

Aston Villa is reported to be in advanced talks about a £ 12 million move for Nottingham Forest side Matty Cash.

The Telegraph has claimed that the Wolves’ Midlands rivals have gotten ahead of players like West Ham and Fulham in the race for the 23-year-old.

But with the Wolves poised to pocket £ 15m on the sale of Doherty, a move by Cash seems to make a lot of sense.

As a former winger, Cash has a penchant for moving forward, with three goals and five assists for Forest last season.

Under Sabri Lamouchi, you are also tasked with playing in a structure similar to what you might find under Nuno with Wolves. His engine will also ensure that after Doherty, the Wolves still have a regular option on the right side of the field.

With Wolves reportedly looking to evolve the team and at the quoted price, he could be an ideal signing.

Jeff Shi has claimed that the recruiting team is working around the clock to seal arrivals, but a move by Cash could allay a number of fears within the fanbase.
