Jurgen Klopp has taken the blame for Rhian Brewster’s costly penalty error against Arsenal at the Community Shield.

Brewster came in with just moments left in the game and then hit the bar to give Arsenal a lead in shooting that the Gunners never gave up.

Liverpool fans have high hopes for Brewster and the player was visibly devastated by missing the crucial penalty, but Klopp insisted the forward was not to blame.

“This will not hurt Rhian,” said the Liverpool manager. If anyone is to blame, it is me.

“I wanted him on the job because he is a true and confident finisher. Not today. That happens in life and in football.

“We all have to learn and show that we can deal with losses. If I had scored and someone else failed, it’s the same issue.

‘There are more important reasons than that. Losing it like this is possible. I’ve never seen him lose one, but it happens. ”

Liverpool players, including Curtis Jones, comforted Brewster when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang outpointed Alisson on Arsenal’s fifth penalty to condemn Liverpool to defeat.

It is the second year in a row that Liverpool have lost the Community Shield on penalties and Klopp admitted it was a “sad” day for the reigning Premier League champions.

“Today I was sad,” Klopp said after the game.

“ When you play against a formation like this, which happened to us almost always, not only when we are 1-0 down, even when it is 0-0, many teams play like this, then you must be in the final. really cool third.

‘Sometimes you want to force it, create angles, create crosses, go behind, all these kinds of things. The pace for that slowed down a bit.

“We couldn’t create exactly the opportunity we wanted, but we had two and the third with which we scored.

“Against a team with the quality of Arsenal, some days should be enough.

When you finish it, it is enough. When you don’t finish it, it’s not enough and today it’s not enough. ‘
