JK Rowling is returning an award after claiming organizers have mistakenly labeled her as transphobic.
The 55-year-old author of Harry Potter returned her Ripple of Hope award to the American group Robert F Kennedy Human Rights.
Its president, Kerry Kennedy, was one of those who criticized the views of the best-selling writer.
Rowling has been at the center of a dispute over trans rights since last year.
In announcing her decision to return the gong, Rowling wrote online that the organization’s president and the daughter of the late Senator Robert Kennedy, “felt the need to publish a statement denouncing my views” on the group’s website.
The author said she was saddened, but added: “The statement incorrectly implied that I was transphobic.
“I absolutely reject the accusation that I hate trans people or wish them ill.”
She said in a post on her website: “In solidarity with those who have contacted me but are struggling to make their voice heard, and due to the very serious conflict of views between myself and RFKHR, I feel I have no other choice. to Return the Ripple of Hope award that I was awarded last year.
“I am deeply saddened that the RFKHR felt compelled to take this position, but no award or honor, regardless of my admiration for the person for whom it was appointed, means so much to me that I would lose the right to follow the dictates of my own conscience. “.
Rowling has previously said that she was partially motivated to speak up due to her experience of sexual abuse and assault.
‘SADDENED’
Actors from the Harry Potter universe, including Daniel Radcliffe and Eddie Redmayne, have criticized the author.
Four authors resigned from Rowling’s literary agency after claiming that the company refused to release a statement in support of the rights of transgender people.
Earlier this year, he faced backlash over a series of allegedly transphobic tweets.
Rowling posted a response to a headline that referred to “menstruating.”
She wrote: “I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?
Several people responded to point out that it is not only born women who menstruate.
