Stranded unsupported, international students across Australia depend on free food to survive.
International students and other temporary visa holders excluded from federal government support rely on food banks and restaurants that give away free meals to survive during the coronavirus pandemic.
Images of long lines outside emergency relief services have emerged at Sydney and Melbourne’s international student centers, as well as smaller cities like Darwin.
Australia has more than 560,000 international students, many of whom have supported themselves with occasional or part-time jobs while studying.
But as the economy closed and the federal government declined to offer direct financial support to temporary visa holders, the queues that form every day outside food banks suggest that surprising numbers are now struggling to feed themselves.
National food aid charities say the increase in demand has been huge, fueled by an increase in applications from temporary visa holders.

This three-star Michelin restaurant in Virginia has its own innovative solutions to the new normal:
There you can enjoy a good meal in an ornate three-star Michelin restaurant, when you spot something strange. The waiter refills the patron’s glass of wine sitting next to you. The person does not move, does not blink. They don’t even say “thank you” to the waiter. You are dining with a doll. Welcome to dinner in the era of the coronavirus.
That’s the experience that the Inn at Little Washington, a restaurant in northern Virginia, is planning for diners as they experience what dinner might be like amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
With the idea that guests can feel alone eating in a restaurant that can only reach 50% of its capacity, the maximum required by Virginia’s social distancing rules, the restaurant will place mannequins in their dining rooms.
A pub without a bar: what it will look like now visiting a pub in the Australian state of New South Wales
In Australia, the state government of New South Wales has announced that kitchen bars and clubs may reopen on May 15, as Covid-19 locks ease. The reopening of restaurants and cafes will be allowed on the same date.
But saying “pubs are reopening” doesn’t capture the truth of the situation. Bars and pubs will be subject to the same social distance and personnel limits as other places, with 4 square meters of space for each client, up to a maximum of 10 clients. According to the public health order issued on May 14, pubs and clubs may only open “an on-site eating area”, and may serve alcohol “only if any liquor sold is sold with or in addition to the food served “
The experience most typically associated with a pub, ordering a beer from the counter, will not return to the menu. “The ability to run politics in the front bar of a pub is probably still a long way off,” John Green of the Australian Hotel Association told Guardian Australia:

Meanwhile, the EU pledged to increase support for the island’s separatist north, led by Turkey. Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen, in response to a request for help from Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, said the block would provide 2.5 million euros for the immediate purchase of medical equipment. Additional assistance will also be sent to support 25 health workers over the next three months with additional aid going to farmers, he wrote in a letter to Akinci.
“The pandemic has forced humanity to deal with an unprecedented situation, so we must all do our part and work together during these difficult times,” the EU chief said in the letter.
A moderate, whose five-year term was due to end in April before the coronavirus caused the presidential election to be postponed, Akinci had requested support in late March.
The leader had been criticized by the self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the State and other hard-line nationalist politicians for having previously accepted the help of Greek Cypriots. A deputy described it as an attempt to “make the Greek side look good.”
Akinci has said he will compete for a second term when the polls are held on October 11.th.
After implementing strict blockade measures, Cyprus, the easternmost member of the EU, has managed to maintain tight control over the pandemic reporting 905 confirmed cases in the internationally recognized Greek south and some 108 in the north. To date there have been 24 Covid-related deaths in the south and four in the north.

Another case of coronavirus has been detected in the areas of the British sovereign base in Cyprus, it was announced on Thursday.
A statement confirmed that “one more member of the Cyprus community of British Forces” had tested positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday. The individual was in self-isolation after showing what was described as “only mild symptoms”.
“This brings the total number of positive tests within British bases to 12,” the announcement said.
It was unclear if the person had recently traveled from the UK. Despite the fact that commercial air traffic has been suspended since March 21 by Greek Cypriot authorities on the war-torn Mediterranean island, the UK military is believed to have continued to transport personnel by transport aircraft from Britain. However, the Republic’s blocking regulations are enforced in the overseas territories with arrivals from the United Kingdom to detect the virus and they are ordered to isolate themselves for two weeks.
The bases, a legacy from Cyprus’s past as a former crown colony, are home to almost 6,000 British servicemen and their dependents.
