Rock star Bryan Adams apologized after posting an expletive-laden coronavirus tirade on social media.
On Monday, he wrote: “Thank you for eating bats, selling animals in the wet market, making viruses greedy. [expletives], the whole world is now on hold. “
Many interpreted the star’s comments as anti-Asian or anti-Chinese, but some animal rights groups praised him.
“Apologies to each and every one who took offense at my post yesterday,” Adams said in a new post Tuesday.
“There is no excuse, I just wanted to talk about the horrible animal cruelty in these wet markets as the possible source of the virus and promote veganism.”
He added: “I have love for all people and my thoughts go out to everyone who is dealing with this pandemic around the world.”
The singer was due to perform in London this week, before the closure measures take effect.
‘Irresponsible’
After his original comments were published, the Canadian singer was criticized by Amy Go, president of the Chinese Canadian National Council for Social Justice.
“This is so irresponsible and so, so, so, so racist,” he told CBC News. “People admire public figures. Many see him as an idol.”
Go suggested that Adams’ comments would intensify “racist hatred against the Chinese.”
Wet markets are a common sight across Asia. They sell live fish, chickens, and wildlife, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables, dry goods, and household products.
Last Friday, the World Health Organization said that one of those markets in central China’s Wuhan City played a role in the outbreak as a source or possibly as an “amplifying scenario,” although it stressed that it was necessary. further research on the link.
‘The damage is already done’
Adams’s original comments came the night a three-night residency was supposed to start at London’s Albert Hall.
“Tonight was supposed to be the start of a concert tenure … but thanks to some [expletive] greedy for bats, selling animals in the wet market, greedy for virus making [expletives], the entire world is now on hold, not to mention the thousands who have suffered or died from this virus, “he wrote.
“My message to them other than ‘thanks to [expletive] a lot is going vegan. “
A link to the post has since been removed from his Twitter account, but Adams’ original statement remains on his Instagram page. By Tuesday morning, her name was all the rage on social media.
“Wow. What racist trash is coming from someone you respected,” wrote Instagram user @globalcanuck.
“Bryan Adams’ racist xenophobic tirade has been active for 10 hours. The damage has already been done.” added Dr. Wing Kar Li on Twitter.
However, animal rights group Peta applauded Adams’ promotion of veganism.
“That is why it is crucial that everyone go vegan now to avoid the next pandemic,” he wrote in a response to the star’s Instagram post.
“It is up to us to create a kinder and healthier future for all species.”
