‘Wages without permission could be cut to 60 percent, but extended to some until SEPTEMBER,’ as Boris Johnson plans a major announcement TOMORROW

  • The Prime Minister confirmed in the Commons that an announcement would be made tomorrow
  • Scheme that currently pays up to 80% of wages, up to a maximum of £ 2,500 per month
  • Reports suggest that a lower rate could continue for several months
  • Pubs, restaurants, hairdressers, gyms face close until July at the earliest

Chancellor Rishi Sunak will make a major announcement about the billion-pound leave scheme tomorrow, Boris Johnson has revealed in the midst of reports that some workers may receive taxpayer cash to cover wages through September.

Johnson confirmed in the Commons this afternoon that something was planned as parliamentarians questioned him about the future of the plan.

The Treasury is known to be looking for ways to reduce the scheme that pays up to 80 percent of wages, to a maximum of £ 2,500 per month.

However, some workers in sectors facing more months of uncertainty may receive supplements if they cannot return to work, or only part-time.

Mr. Johnson’s roadmap to releasing the blockade, released today, suggested that hospitality companies and others, like hairdressers and gyms, would be closed until July at the earliest.

Responding to questions from parliamentarians this afternoon, Mr. Johnson said: “I think the licensing scheme has been one of the most notable features of the Government’s response and is unlike anything seen internationally.”

‘Six and a half million people are currently supported. It is absolutely correct that we do so.

“I don’t want to anticipate what (Mr Sunak) will say, but the House will hear more about that tomorrow.”

The current version of the plan will expire in late June, and companies will be able to claim 80 percent of a suspended worker’s salary up to a monthly limit of £ 2,500.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak could announce the changes to the Coronavirus Job Retention Plan as soon as today.

A Treasury source said the Telegraph talks were underway with final decisions yet to be made.

A Treasury spokesman said: “Future decisions around the scheme will take into account the broader context of any blockade extension, as well as the public health response, so that individuals and businesses can return to work when it is safe to do so. “

Last week it emerged that the leave plan will become more flexible, including allowing some workers to be part-time and reducing the amount of the government wage subsidy.

First announced in March, the measure was opened for three months, dated March 1 to the end of May, and then extended for one month until the end of June.
