A dog and a cat died after being trapped in a flat that caught fire in Cambridge.

A fire broke out at the Kingsway Flats, Carlton Way, in Arbury, around 3:45 p.m. on Sunday afternoon (May 10) with witnesses who said they saw “thick black smoke” coming out of the building.

Around 40 firefighters assisted the incident with around seven fire trucks. The fire went out just before 6 p.m.

The Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that one person was evacuated from a neighboring apartment and that five people self-evacuated from the building. One person was taken to the hospital as a precaution, while a total of five were injured.

They added that two people were on the floor at the time the fire started and that they were able to leave the property through the rear balcony.

However, a cat and dog that were trapped inside the apartment were killed by smoke inhalation.

The damage caused by the fire was so severe that the power could not be returned to the neighboring area for some time.

Firefighters will now carry out a full investigation into the cause of the fire.

Cambridge city council officials have helped those affected by the fire, including finding alternative places to stay in the meantime.
