Motorists have been caught breaching the coronavirus lockdown to travel hundreds of thousands to buy puppies and speakers

Fespite the nation being told not to make non-essential journeys as part of the fight against the killer bug swathes of drivers have ignored the order.

Motorists are still jumping in their cars to make non-essential journeys during the bank holiday weekend with the popular Lake District in their sights despite it being closed during the lockdown.

Cumbria Police have revealed several examples of violating motorists with the message: “Lockdown is still on. The Lake District is still closed.”

On Saturday a driver was stopped as he attempted to drive from Manchester to Dundee so he could buy a puppy.

While another motorist from London was on his way to Manchester to buy an Audi but decided to take a detour to Carlisle so he could treat himself to speakers from an eBay seller.

A family from Wigan were fined and given a police escort after they decided to visit Windermere.

A journey of 250 miles didn’t determine another group from traveling from London to Ambleside.

Police told them: “Unfortunately, London is not a reasonable distance to have traveled from.”

However shortly after a family clocked up a whopping 307 miles by visiting the Lake District from Southend-on-Sea in Essex, resulting in them being given “succinct words of advice”.

Police said they violations are happening regularly with them describing the actions of three men who had traveled from Stockport to Cumbria “to feed the ducks” as “quackers”.

Other drivers falsely claimed they were on their way to work but it took little detective work to unravel the truth.

Meanwhile in other parts of the country police were also weeding out drivers ignoring the lockdown.

A checkpoint was set up at the end of the A23 into Patcham to stop bored families flocking to Brighton to enjoy the hot weather on Saturday.

Officers from Surrey and Sussex Road Policing Unit turned back scores of cars and fined some drivers for breaching the lockdown rules.

One motorist traveled more than 100 miles from Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire.

Residents cheered and voiced their support their actions.

A spokesman for Sussex Police: “It’s not a dedicated coronavirus stop-check, but as part of the routine stop-check, we are asking people why they are here, where they are going and turning them around if they do not have a purpose . ”

In east London police admitted they are ‘fighting a losing battle’ to clampdown on hundreds of people ignoring the lockdown to picnic in the park.

Officers in Hackney said groups of people have snubbed the Government’s order to stay at home instead choosing to enjoy “pizzas, beers, wines” while disregarding social distancing measures.

Hackney Police posted a statement on its official Twitter page alongside an image thought to be of London Fields, saying: “Sadly we’re fighting a losing battle in the parks today.

“Literally hundreds of people sitting having pizza, beers, wines. As always a big thank you to those that are observing the guidelines.”

On Thursday the Government formally extended the lockdown by three more weeks.

The extension comes as Prime Minister Boris Johnson will reveal his plans on how the nation will ease out of the lockdown on Sunday.

Mr Johnson’s “roadmap”, which aims to get the country back to normal, is staggered over the next six months but he said some steps will happen the next day “if we possibly can”.
