‘I, we salute you sir, how wonderful you really are. Thank you Colonel, for what you did then and for what you did today ❤️ #captaintommoore #veday # veday75 #Thankyou #hero ‘

Colonel Tom celebrated his birthday with his daughter Hannah, 49, her husband Colin, and their two sons Benjie, 16, and Georgia, 11.

Her eldest daughter Lucy was unable to travel from her Reading home to join the celebration, but she made a virtual appearance via video call.

The 100-year-old was promoted from captain to honorary colonel last week after raising more than £ 32 million.

He now holds the Guinness World Record for the most money raised by an individual on a sponsored walk in the UK.

Colonel Tom also marked his birthday by setting a second world record for the oldest person to have a number one single on the UK chart after his duet’s success with Michael Ball.

The record was previously held by Tom Jones, who reached No. 1 with [Barry] Islands In The Stream was 68 years old in 2006, 32 years younger than Tom is now, 100 years old.

Colonel Tom and Michael’s hit version of the Liverpool Football Club anthem, Never Never Walk Alone, was also the best-selling single of 2020.

Speaking from his home at the time, the war hero said, ‘What wonderful news to receive today, a # 1 single and a record as well: My grandchildren cannot believe I am a leader on the list!

‘I have to thank Michael Ball, the NHS Care Voices Choir, and everyone behind the scenes who shared their talents and expertise to raise money for the NHS, to whom we owe so much.

‘And of course to the public for buying the single and donating, we are in this together, and I am always grateful for your support. And this just proves ‘You will never walk alone’.

Since then, a star-studded cover version of the Foo Fighters song Times Like These, featuring Dua Lipa and Chris Martin, has left Colonel Tom out of first place.
