He said locals would be among the last to reopen after Covid-19 closed.

Pub industry experts fear that staying closed until the end of the year could kill a large number of Britain’s 48,349 locals.

Mr. Gove was asked if the boozers would open “before winter.”

Frank Maguire of Truman Brewery, which has been on the market in London since 1666, said: “Things are looking pretty bad.

“At this rate, it seems unlikely that we will reopen before Christmas.

“Christmas is almost as big as business for the pub industry. It will be a great loss.

“January and February are dead months; Without Christmas to carry us on, we will fight. It will be a very bleak start until 2021.

“We have the added blow of losing the euros this year. Every game in England is worth millions to the industry.”

Tonight, the directed Cabinet Office issued a furious rebuttal to claims that it had mishandled the crisis and Boris Johnson had missed the crucial Cobra meetings.

He said: “This is an unprecedented global pandemic and we have taken the right steps at the right time to combat it, guided at all times by the best scientific advice.”

“The Prime Minister has been at the forefront of the response to this, providing leadership during this enormously challenging period for the entire nation.”

Earlier, Education Secretary Gavin Williamson refused to set a date for the reopening of schools.
