The “terrifying” outbreak of the GREAT BRITAIN coronavirus is spreading up to four times faster than in other parts of Europe, Austria warned yesterday.

Health Minister Rudolf Anschober said the charts show that the UK has failed to stem the rise in infections as in other countries that imposed blockades before.

The minister highlighted the rapid growth of cases in the UK, using a chart that suggests the figure is among the worst in Europe.

With an average of more than ten days, the daily increase in positive tests is said to be 7.5 percent, Anschober said.

The equivalent figure in Austria, which was one of the first nations to put a lockout, is less than a quarter at just 1.8 percent.

He said yesterday at a press conference: “That is what scares a lot of people at the European level right now, that is the figure in Britain of 7.5 percent.”

Italy, Spain and France, the most affected European nations so far, have reduced their daily increase in cases to between 2.5 and 3.7 percent, the minister said.

The tables show the average for the past ten days, but are not adjusted to account for the peak of the outbreak at different times in each country.

The UK has been roughly two weeks behind Italy’s curve, experts say.

It comes after the World Health Organization singled out the UK for resisting the downward trend.

Dr. Hans Kluge, WHO director for Europe, warned yesterday: “Of the ten countries in the region with the highest number of cases, there have been optimistic signs in terms of increasing numbers in Spain, Italy, Germany, France and Switzerland in recent years weeks.

“But small positive signs in some countries are tempered by sustained or increased levels of incidents in other countries, including the UK, Turkey, Ukraine, Belarus and Russia.”

Dr. Kluge added: “The storm clouds from this pandemic still weigh heavily on the European region.

“The next few weeks will be critical for Europe. There is no quick way to return to normal.”

Austria allowed some stores to reopen earlier this week after seeing the infection rate drop after four weeks of closing.

He has recorded 14,476 Covid-19 cases and only 410 deaths.

Italy and Spain have also begun to relax closure measures, and Germany said some nonessential stores may reopen next week despite a further increase in cases.

But France and the United Kingdom have extended their blockades until at least the beginning of May.

The British government says it has “flattened the curve” and that hospital admissions are declining, but we cannot risk a second wave.

Deaths in the United Kingdom rose by 861 yesterday to 13,729, while the number of positive tests increased by 4.7 percent to 103,093.
