66 more coronavirus deaths in northeast hospitals as England total rises 740

Sixty-six other people have died in northeast hospitals after contracting coronavirus.

NHS England announced Thursday that 740 more Covid-19 patients had died, bringing the total number of confirmed hospital deaths in the country to 12,396.

Figures show that 151 occurred on April 15, 314 on April 14, and 122 on April 13, while 143 occurred between April 1 and April 12.

The remaining 10 deaths were in March, and the first on March 9.

Thursday’s figure for the Northeast is 52 more than the number announced on Wednesday.

South Tees reported the highest number of deaths with 16, while there were 12 in South Tyneside and 10 in Northumbria.

Nationwide, the death rate for men with coronavirus was twice as high as that of women in England and Wales in March, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Covid-19 was the underlying cause of death in 3,372 deaths in March: the equivalent of 69 per 100,000 people.

It accounted for 7% of all deaths in England and Wales that month: 9% of all deaths for men and 6% for women.

Meanwhile, the government is expected to announce Thursday that the blockade restrictions will extend for another three weeks.

It came after Health Secretary Matt Hancock promised more support for the care sector, including an expansion of testing and more protective gear.
