A 99-year-old war veteran who has raised over £ 12 million for the NHS by walking in his garden has now completed his challenge.

Captain Tom Moore, who turns 100 at the end of the month, broke his original goal of raising £ 1,000 by walking 100 stretches of his Bedfordshire garden.

After reaching his goal, complete with an honor guard from the 1st Yorkshire Regiment Battalion, he said he felt “fine” and was glad to be “surrounded by the right kind of people.”

Before speaking to Sky News during a break from his walks, Captain Moore said, “We originally set out to raise a little money by walking and climbing 100 times in reference to my 100th birthday.

“But if I am turning 100 tomorrow, I will have to continue after my birthday, which will not matter because I will continue to walk while people are contributing money to a wonderful fund for the NHS.”

He has received multiple messages of thanks from NHS workers, sports personalities and politicians, and there are even calls for him to be knighted.

“It would be wonderful to have such an honor, but I don’t expect any of that,” he told the BBC.

“I think it would be absolutely huge: Sir Thomas Moore, have you ever heard something like that?”

Dressed in a jacket and tie and showing his war medals, he added: “For all those people who are having difficulties right now: the sun will shine on you again and the clouds will go away.”
