Charles Ingram has launched a protest against Chris Tarrant after the start of the ITV Test, the drama about Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? cheating scandal
Ingram has called the TV presenter “tricked” into accusing him of cheating when he won the £ 1 million prize in 2001.
The scandal saw Ingram and his wife Diana accused of conspiring to take the money home by having their alleged accomplice Tecwen Whittock cough into the audience to help him choose the correct answer.
In a series of tweets, Ingram accused Tarrant of only deciding he was guilty after watching a tape in which the cough became more apparent after the edit.
Ingram tweeted: “We were good until told otherwise. Tarrant wants to protect his legacy, his team and the integrity of the UK production.”
“I understand that, but there is the most important issue of justice … including the entire public that spent millions calling and showed up. Who protects us?”
He said that Tarrant should have been called as a defense witness and accused him of failing to protect the contestants.
Ingram continued: “Tarrant should have witnessed the defense.
“I think he has shown that he will do anything to protect his legacy, the famous UK production and his ‘family’ regardless of what they have done.”
“It says a lot that you don’t feel any responsibility towards the people who apply and appear on the show.”
He added: “Tarrant is not the person that people think he is. Television does that.
“He suffers from delusions of grandeur, and despite there being no evidence that I cheated, he continues to insist on protecting his peers.
“I’m sad for him. Please, I’m still calm.”
The scandal is being reviewed in the new ITV Quiz drama, with Matthew Macfadyen playing Ingram and Sian Clifford playing his wife Diana.
Tarrant is portrayed by Michael Sheen.
In 2003, the Ingrams were convicted of seeking the execution of a valuable security by deception and were given suspended sentences, each fined £ 15,000 and ordered to pay £ 10,000 for prosecution costs, which was later increased to £ 65,000. .
* The quiz continues tonight at 9 p.m. on ITV
