Julian Assange’s partner, who revealed that she had two children with him while living inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London, has asked that he be released from prison.
Stella Moris said there were now genuine fears for the WikiLeaks founder’s health.
Assange has been held in London’s Belmarsh prison since he was removed from the embassy a year ago, and is awaiting an extradition hearing on behalf of the US. USA, where you are searched for questions about WikiLeaks activities.
He has been in poor health for months, but his friends say the coronavirus is now spreading through Belmarsh.
One prisoner has died and several prison officials are ill, suspected of having the virus, friends say.
In a statement to the courts supporting a request for bail, Moris reveals that he met Assange in 2011 when she was a legal investigator, and was asked to investigate Swedish legal theory and practice.
“Over time, Julian and I developed a strong intellectual and emotional bond. He became my best friend and I became his, “he wrote.
The friendship developed, and despite “extraordinary circumstances,” a close relationship began in 2015, he said.
The couple has two young children: Gabriel, three, and Max, one.
She said she has done everything possible to protect children from the weather around Assange.
Moris added: “My close relationship with Julian has been the opposite of how he is viewed: reserve, mutual respect, and attempts to protect each other from some of the nightmares that have surrounded our lives.”
She said she was making the statement now because their lives were “on the edge” and she feared Assange might die.
He is isolated for 23 hours a day and all visits have stopped, he added.
The extradition hearing is set for May 18 after a Westminster magistrates court judge rejected the requests for a postponement until September on what his legal team said were “insurmountable” difficulties in preparing his case due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
