Is there an end to Ken Block’s creative madness? Simple answer: no. Even in the midst of a global pandemic, his brain is salivating at the idea of what he can build next to send screaming tires into the smoke. And this, ladies and gentlemen, is: the Hoonifox.
Using the largely unloved third-generation Mustang from 1979 to 1993 (think of it as Ford Mustangs’ ‘996’ 911 Porsche), it’s the latest high-powered Frankenstein Ford of Ken and his drifting disciples at Hoonigan Racing . To be used in the eleventh installment of his Gymkhana series, Ken enlisted the help of the man behind the upcoming new Batmobile – Ash Thorpe – to design the fox meat beef pie.
As you can imagine, Ken’s rundown was full Spinal Tap: Take everything to 11. Especially since Ken wants to fully embrace the excess for this project. Inspired by motorsports from the 1980s and Ken’s own ’65 Hoonicorn Mustang, his track has been pumped for squat and square dimensions, while modern WRC-inspired fenders have been bolted to give him the shoulder pads of the eighty. As you can see, an IMSA-esque side exhaust pipe springs out of the body, while an exaggerated wing hangs from the rear as the end of a mullet’s party and details like taillights and rear windows with classic shutters Mustang GT. A nod to the era of cassettes and fluorescent bands. Rad.
What is driving it? Good question. Since the project is only in its early stages (the car currently only exists in these incredibly detailed and photorealistic 3D renderings), the streaming of choice has yet to crash. But there are some suitably juicy options, which include; the twin-turbo Ecoboost V6 from the Ford GT, the same naturally aspirated Roush Yates V8 from the Hoonicorn V1 or, as a kind of curved ball, the electric drive from the new Mustang Mach E. O … even the 1,400 hp engines Electric Mustang drag car.
Being the next evolutionary step on the Hoonicorn plane, whatever is chosen will connect to an AWD system with rally specs. But as Ken has shown (and Audi has failed), sending power to all four wheels doesn’t mean things are boring. Just smokerier. And if you think this is a digital carrot at the end of a stick, think again.
“I want to build the Hoonifox,” says Ken. “And make a Gymkhana video with him. I want a Miami Vice-style version of the 80s if so. Down in Miami. There you have it: my current wish list!
