Appearing on LBC radio today, Buckland hit on Wetherspoons’ plan to reopen, claiming it would confuse the public.
He said: “I can understand the frustration of the owners and owners of retail stores and pubs, who want to return to business.
“But I think it would be a mistake for different companies or individuals to just go tangent and do their thing, which creates confusion for the public.”
“It diminishes the effectiveness of any measure we are taking and jeopardizes all the progress we have made to contain this virus.”
“If we’re going to beat this, if we’re going to win the fight, we have to do it together, so let’s get together and do things in concert rather than going in all directions.”
Bars are currently prohibited from opening, and doing so would violate the law.
Wetherspoons spokesman Eddie Gershon yesterday insisted that the company was simply “guessing” the date and that “it could be completely wrong.”
It occurs when Nicola Sturgeon warned that none of the blocking rules is ready to be lifted.
Despite a massive public relations operation last week to devise options on how Scotland could get out of the blockade, the SNP leader suggested last night that no changes would be made.
She told ITV last night: “People are talking about lifting the blockade, that will not be a time for change, we are going to have to be very careful, very slow, very gradual.”
“I am far from convinced at this stage that when we reach the next revision point on May 7, we will be in a position to lift any of these measures at this time, due to the room for maneuver we are operating. At the moment they are very, very, very tight and tight. “
This week, a government adviser suggested that pubs could limit Brits to three pints when the shutdown is lifted.
Professor Eyal Winter suggested that the British were “hungry” for pubs, and that the government would bring a drink limit to help them stay safe.
The Lancaster University academic insisted that social distancing would be required if pubs were opened.
He is advising the government on how to alleviate coronavirus restrictions, and is speaking to the Cabinet Office behavioral science group.
Pubs have been closed since the UK closed on March 23, but the economist suggested that shop owners and owners could be asked to apply new rules.
He suggested that the owners could ration the amount of beer they serve to two or three pints.
This month Michael Gove was asked if the boozers would open “before winter.”
He said: “The other inference that I draw from your question, which is that the hospitality areas will be among the last to come out of the confinement, yes, that is true.”
