More than 2,000 cases of coronavirus they have been reported in 695 schools maintained across Wales since the period began in September.

Eight out of 10 secondary schools have reported at least one case and nine out of 22 Welsh councils record cases in all of their secondary schools.

The information is presented in Public Health Wales’ general case and prevalence data in schools and universities published for the first time on Thursday.

It shows numbers of coronavirus cases in schools and universities in each local council and health board area between September 1 and November 4.

During that time, 12 universities also reported 279 cases of coronavirus.

All high schools in the following council areas have reported at least one case of Covid-19 since the period began:

  • Blaenau gwent
  • Bridgend
  • Cardiff
  • Merthyr Tydfil
  • Neath Port Talbot
  • Newport
  • Torfaen
  • Vale of Glamorgan
  • Wrexham

Ceredigion schools and universities are the least affected. No cases of coronavirus have been reported at any of its four high schools or at any of its colleges and universities (FE). Only 2.8% of its 36 primaries have reported a case since the term began. These are the lowest rates in Wales.

Across Wales, between September 1 and November 4, there were 2,101 reports of new Covid-19 cases in 695 schools. Of these 951 were cases in staff and 1,150 in students.

With a total of 1,573 schools maintained across Wales, this means 44.2% of schools that have had at least one case of coronavirus since the start of the term in September.

Of the 695 affected schools, 390 have had more than one case and 305 only one case.
