Joe Biden is tantalizingly close to securing the presidency, as votes continue to count in key states after an election with a record turnout and a record number of votes by mail. Donald Trump, seeing his grip on the presidency erode, has threatened to take legal action, recount and even stop the vote count.

Yet despite strong performance by Democrats, the picture is of a deeply divided country whatever the end result. And at least one thing is clear: This election has not seen a total rejection of Trumpism by the Americans, even if Trump comes in as a runner-up.
