TThe polls will open at 7 a.m. EST in critical Pennsylvania, which has been in the spotlight for its rules on voting by mail.
Both candidates have worked hard during their campaigns to put the state on their side, one that Donald Trump managed to win with less than one percent of the electorate in 2016.
Experts say Pennsylvania could be very important in determining the outcome of today’s election.
Pennsylvania State Attorney General Josh Shapiro sparked controversy this morning after suggesting that Trump had already lost the state more than 24 hours before the polls closed.
“If all the votes are added up in the Palestinian Authority, Trump will lose,” Shapiro posted on Twitter Monday night. “That is why he is working overtime to subtract as many votes as possible from this process.”
Shapiro’s comments come at a particularly sensitive time. On Monday, Trump claimed that a recent Supreme Court ruling could cost him votes in the state. The ruling allows Pennsylvania to accept mail-in ballots sent before Election Day and received up to three days later.
“The Supreme Court’s decision to vote in Pennsylvania is VERY dangerous. It will allow rampant and uncontrolled deception and undermine our entire system of laws. It will also induce violence in the streets, ”Trump tweeted.
Joe Biden is also well aware of the importance of the state, having launched his campaign there. He is scheduled to spend Election Night in Scranton, his birthplace, as he works to attract the unionized households that changed him from a Democratic stronghold to a Trump base in 2016.
So far, unlike much of the country, early voting in Pennsylvania has been slow. So far, less than 40 percent of the state’s total electorate in 2016 has cast their votes and we can expect polling stations to be busy around the clock.
