US President Donald Trump and his White House rival Joe Biden have clashed fiercely in the opening moments of their first live television debate.

Trump, a Republican, accused his rival of being in debt to the socialists in his party, saying, “They are going to dominate you, Joe, you know that.”

“Now I am the Democratic party,” replied Mr. Biden, a Democrat.

The 90-minute primetime game in Cleveland, Ohio, is the first of three between the two rivals.

Opinion polls indicate that Biden has a consistent single-digit lead over Trump with 35 days until Election Day.

As the two candidates squabbled over health care Tuesday night, Biden said, “Here’s the deal: Everything he’s saying so far is just a lie.”

“I’m not here to scream your lies. Everybody knows a liar.”

Trump replied, “Joe, you are the liar.”

Trump challenged his rival to say whether he would fill the Supreme Court, adding more justices to tip his ideological balance, as some Democrats have urged.

The president also demanded that Biden publish a list of his nominees for the Supreme Court.

But Mr. Biden wouldn’t be attracted.

“Do you want to shut up, man?” said the Democrat.

“Who is on your list, Joe?” Trump said. “It will fill the field.”

The moderator, Chris Wallace, intervened to advance the debate.

“That was really a productive segment,” Biden said with apparent sarcasm. “Keep barking, man.”

Trump replied, “People understand, Joe. Forty-seven years, you haven’t done anything.”

The president later questioned why a company co-founded by his rival’s son, Hunter Biden, had received $ 3.5 million from a Moscow billionaire, according to a report released by Senate Republicans.

Biden denied the claim and the two yelled at each other.

When the moderator tried to interrupt, the Democrat said, “It’s difficult to talk to this clown, sorry, this person.”

“This is the deal. We want to talk about families and ethics, I don’t want to do that, I mean his family that we could talk about all night.”
