The Foreign Secretary has told Sky News that the UK’s relationship with the US will go from “strength to strength” regardless of the outcome of the elections.
Dominic Raab said the elections are still “too close to be called”, but he is totally confident that the US system “will give us a definitive result.”
He told Kay Burley: “The UK-US relationship is in great shape and we are confident it will go from strength to strength, whichever candidate wins the election.”
The votes are still being counted, but Donald Trump has accused his opponents of “fraud of the American public” and claimed victory in the US elections before all the results were announced.
It could be days before the world knows who has won.
Raab acknowledged that there would be “slightly different contours of opportunities and risks” for the UK-US relationship depending on who is in the White House.
But the chancellor told Sky News that the “foundation” of security, economic and cultural ties meant that “the relationship will go from strength to strength.”
When asked if a Joe Biden win would damage the relationship, given his opposition to Brexit and his support for Ireland, Raab said he was “confident that the relationship would be in good shape.”
Raab said: “I’m not concerned with the relationship. The contours of opportunities and risks always change a bit, but that needs to be contrasted with the context of this base and this broader set of interests that are so strong.”
