14-year-old Anika Shebarolu was declared the winner of the 2020 3M Young Scientist Challenge, a competition for middle school scientists. The eighth grade class project won him a cash prize of 25,000.

“I isolated the lead compound from a database of about 698 million atoms,” Chebrol said.

That discovery, which she hopes will create a new weapon against COVID-19, began two years ago when Chebrollo was researching the Spanish flu epidemic.

“I just wanted to help the world and let the kids know they could do what they had to do,” he said.
